November 2011 Brock Sakey and Blaze Schwartz win the Doubles Wildcard into the 2011 Pensacola Men's Pro Futures! Brock and Blaze held off Scott Baehr and Whitney Mann to win the Men's Open Doubles at the 2011 City Clay Court Championships Nov 6, 2011 at The Club. September 2011 2011 Bike Raiser: The 2011 TennisPensacola.com Bike Raiser, for Communities Caring at Christmas was held Sept 30th at The Club in Gulf Breeze, FL. HUGE THANKS and SHOUTOUT to The Club for hosting the event and donating all the courts, Brian and the ladies inside. We had GREAT turnout - so HUGE THANKS to all who joined in the fun! Photos are available in the 2011 Bike Raiser Album. We also got some video from rounds on court 2. There are 8 clips in all, some full rounds, others partial.

September 2011 Local Pros on the move... in the "worst kept secret" category, two of our favorite local pros are moving on or around: George Cobia will be leaving P'cola and PAC to take a position at The Dunes - and Will Morris will be leaving Roger Scott and taking over the tennis programs at PAC in George's old place. So, if you see either George or Will, take a minute and wish them all the very best in their new endeavors!!
 
September 2011 Cameron Jones - New Tennis Pro in town: Though Cameron has been on the job for a month or so at Pensacourt, please help us welcome Cameron to the local tennis community.
 
September 2011 Shoreline courts closed till sometime in November. The contractor wants a secure construction site so the courts at Shoreline will be closed until sometime in November. Quads, Clinics, Ladies' League, USTA play etc. will be at other locations during this time. Contact James at 850-292-8655 or Terrina at 850-292-8663 for specific information about alternate locations.

SUNDAY FUN GROUP EXCEPTION: The Shoreline Fun Group will be allowed to continue using the courts on Sunday evenings for now - just park behind the rec center and enter courts at the center gate. Contact Michael Kemerer at 850-206-9090 for more information.
 
September 2011 One of our fellow tennis nuts, Bobby Greenberg, was working at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 when it was attacked. He sustained only a cut on his head - I say "only" meaning 16 stitches worth - and I don't mention how tough this had to have been on Leslye who couldn't reach Bobby ... ya know what - we have some pretty dog-gone terrific folks in our little tennis family here in P'cola! and, though I know Bobby would never seek notice, I say, "Hats off Bobby!" - and to the rest of our tennis family, give Bobby a nod next time you see him out on the courts. July 2011Lina Stephens and Jon Sloan played the Orange Beach open mixed this past weekend in the 8th Annual Orange Beach Adult Tennis tournament. Team Sloan/Stephens were unseeded in a draw filled with local pros and former ATP Tour players. They won without losing a set!!! WAY BIG ATTABOYs the Lina and Jon for representing Pensacola the way it should be! YEAH!!
 
July 2011 Jim Morgan - Artist ... Who Knew?? Our very own Jim Morgan just completed a painting of one of our local juniors, Graham Edgar, from a photo of Graham at the 2011 Heads-n-Tails tennis tournament. Jim presented the painting to Graham in honor of his graduation from UNF where he had played tennis for several years. ...click the photo right for larger view...

July 2011 In the News - several local juniors are really doing well these days!!

• Will Neuner made quarters of national clay courtsB18s Beat the #1 ranked junior in Florida.
• Reece Acree made finals of Tallahassee designated B18s
• Chris Ephron made the semis of tallahassee designated B14s
• Jacob Baehr made the quarters of designated b12s

And as an aside, Derrick and Austin Racine made the finals of back draw in National Father Son Clay Courts in Cincinnati.

June 2011 Argonaut Pair Earns All-American Honors: University of West Florida men's tennis stalwarts Andrey Pozhidaev and Leandro Ferreira earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America honors for the 2011 season, it was announced today. The duo was honored as a Division II Doubles All-America selection, while Ferreira also earned the distinction of being a Singles All-American. ...read more...
 
June 2011 The United States Professional Tennis Association-Florida Division (USPTA Florida) held its 2011 Awards Presentation on June 4, 2011. The top professionals across the state were recognized for outstanding performances on and off the courts. Our own Michael Edge, of Roger Scott Tennis Center, received the award for District Professional of the Year for the Panhandle region. Way to go Michael! ...read the entire story on USTA-FL.

• I didn't have a wind screen - sorry - so you'll hear the wind on Sunday.
• It's a WMV played in media player. I'll try to compress the MOV version for mac folks who can't watch it as WMV - or try to find a good SWF compressor - but the MOV file is larger (3GB+) than I care to stream from the server and larger (and longer) than YouTube will allow. BTW, if you do watch, you can right-click and select zoom then fullscreen once it starts for a better view.

March 2011 2011 Calcutta For a Cure: The 2011 Pink Ribbon tourney kicked off on Thursday the 24th with the Calcutta For a Cure. Plenty of players and hecklers - and, even though most of the tennis wouldn't give Rafa nightmares (or maybe it would ;-), everyone seemed to have a GREAT time! Here are a couple of rounds (only 16 points each) - if you do watch, be SURE to click the fullscreen control once it starts for a better view 8-)

March 2011 2011 USTA QuickStart Jamboree: Roger Scott Tennis Center in Pensacola, Fl. hosted the 2011 QuickStart Jamboree this year. All the kids had a great time, plenty of tennis instruction, plenty of prizes and stuff - and plenty of cake and refreshments. A visit from the Mayor Ashton Hayward topped thing off.

January 2011 Rule Change 2011: There is an interesting change to "The Code" in the "2011 Friend at Court," the bible for tennis. December 2010 Mario and Marilyn Alvarez GOLD & BONZE WINNERS at the Florida Senior Games this past December 7-10, 2011, in Fort Myers, Fl.
Mario was a Semifinalist in Men's Singles (70-74). Mario and his partner, Irwin Lahasky of Deerfield Beach, also took Gold in Men's Doubles (70-74).

Marilyn took Bronze in Ladies' Singles (Age 55-59).

Both Mario and Marilyn are now qualified for Singles and Doubles in the National Seniors Games to be held in Houston, Texas, June 25-28, 2011.
