2008 Pensacola Men and Ladies USTA 7.5 Combo Teams #2 in Florida!
Jan. 11, 2009...
The Pensacola Men's 7.5 team, represented by Calvin Moore (Captain), Terry Thrash, Pete Gilroy, Nick King, Shane Russell, Bob Campbell, Terry Neill, and Paul Einhart, had three tough matches to reach the semifinals on Sunday. In their flight one division, they had one match against North Palm Beach (won 2-1), two Saturday matches against Jacksonville (won 2-1) and South/Miami Dade (won 2-1).
Then they competed against Gainesville/Lake City and won 2-1, which put them in the finals against Tallahassee. In the finals they lost 2-1 to the Tallahassee men in a 3rd set tie-breaker on the deciding court. A competitive and fun tennis weekend was enjoyed by all! They are looking forward to the chance to do it again in the 2009 season!
Our Pensacola Ladies 7.5 team, represented by Tami Moore (Captain), Mindi Straw, Mary Day, Susan Nitterauer, Beverly Patteson, Danielle Carro, and Tara Dominguez had 3 tough matches to get to the semis. In our flight one division, we had to play Polk County (won 3-0), Orlando (won 2-1) (Friday matches) and Charlotte County (won 2-1) for our Saturday match. Our semifinal match was played against Tallahassee, and we dug out that match with a 2-1 win, which put us in the finals on Sunday morning against the Jacksonville team.
Those crafty Jacksonville ladies took it to us (with the wind, net fairies and experience on their side!) and took 2 of our courts. Our court one team prevailed by slugging it out in a 3rd set tie breaker for the win on that court...no bagels for us Pensacola ladies! It was a great time and great tennis all around. This is the third year in a row that our team has made it to Sectionals, and each year we have gotten one step further. We're extremely proud to have made it to the finals this year!
A special thanks to our teammate Rebecca Rood - though representing her 6.5 team at Sectionals, she offered us her support as well, cheering us on from the sidelines!
