May 2010...

Some sixty-six players participated in the 2010 Kentucky Derby Tennis Classic held May 1 at The Club in Gulf Breeze. It was a foggy, windy but warm day that featured many tie-breakers in the men's women's and mixed doubles events. Evidently the competition was pretty balanced.

Duane manned the grill at noon with marinated chicken and pizza followed after the Kentucky Derby race itself. Men's and Women's doubles were played in the morning with Mixed doubles after lunch.

Players received T-shirts, lunch and several hours of tennis. Winners picked from an assortment of practical and fun prizes. Despite the dreary day, the tennis was hot. Many thanks to the Club staff for another first class event.

The format was 8 game pro sets with a 10 point tie breaker at 7-All. Since there were more men than women tournament director worked out a special format for one of the divisions of mixed. The winners were as follows:

Men's Divisions:

• Men Arabians: Ron Busbee and Holger Schneidt.
• Men Broncos Art and Garion Adkins.
• Men Clydesdales: John Register and Bill Brockington.

Ladies Divisions:

• Lady Donkeys: Jean Lee and Linda Register.
• Lady Clydesdales: Barbara Shoulders and Leigh Diamond.
• Lady Broncos: Tie
           Ginny Graybiel and Shaner Garner
           Julie Birk and Jackie Neese.

Mixed Divisions:

• Mixed Arabians (A): Paul Einhart and Linda Vilardi.
• Mixed Arabians (B): Scott Harrison and Allison Randol.
• Mixed Broncos: Tie
           Tom Carlos and Penny Emling
           Woody Barnes and Brenda Harris.
• Mixed Clydesdales: Tie
           Scott Peck and Melina Burtt
           Wade Wilson and Donna Siskind.
• Mixed Donkeys: Bill Tibbitts, Linda Tibbitts, Whitney Sumrall and Marcia West.
