Area Men Fare Well at The 2010 Clarence Chaffee Memorial Tennis Tournament March 2010By Scott Harrison
Eight Pensacola area men participated in the Clarence Chaffee Memorial Tennis Tournament last February 25-28 at Hidden Dunes Beach and Tennis Resort in Destin.
Buddy Miles of Gulf Breeze defeated Pensacola's Doug Patton 6-4, 6-2 to win the Men's 55 singles title. Later on Sunday, Miles teamed with Pensacola's Scott Harrison to down Patton and Dewayne McCamish of Signal Mtn, TN 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to win the Men's 55 Doubles.
Pensacola players Art Adkins, Mike Clapsadl, Ed Dotson and Lloyd Johnson along with Pensacola Beach's Bubba Blair played in the event. Adkins had a terrific weekend as an unseeded player making the Men's 60 singles and doubles final. He lost tough three setters in both divisions. John Pittman of Enterprise, AL upended Adkins 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the singles and then teamed with Birmingham's Bob Greene to defeat Adkins and Santa Rosa Beach's Lyle Sandquist 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Lloyd Johnson defeated Carl Valentino of League City, TX 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-6 to win the Men's 65 singles consolation division.
Clapsadl and Dotson played both the Men's 55 and 60 doubles. They won a round in the 55's and defeated Valentino and Houston's Gary Plank 7-6(3), 6-3 to win the 60's consolation event.
Johnson and Blair lost in the consolation final of the Men's 65 Doubles 6-2,7-5 to Don Smith of Evansville, IN and Darrell McDonald of Chattanooga.
The weather was absolutely beautiful this year as 63 players from 14 states and Canada enjoyed not only the tennis and camaraderie but also plenty of food and beverages each day of the tourney. Tournament directors Myke Loomis, Renee Broxson and Jerry Renaud run one of the best tournaments anywhere.
