Pensacola Juniors Do Well in Mobile

Thirteen Pensacola area junior tennis players traveled to Mobile, Alabama on November 13-15 to play in the Country Club of Mobile Junior Invitational.

Pensacola was represented by Jacob Baehr, Chris Ephron, Austin and Luke Racine, Alex Shald, Frances, Lucy and Reed Taylor. Gulf Breeze players included Kelly Barnhill, Harley Spann and Daniel Sullivan. Finally, Dan Erickson and Britni Thibodeau made up the Pace contingent. Many of these players played two singles and a doubles event.

All the singles matches were 2 of 3 sets with a 10 point tie breaker for the third set.

In the Boys' 10 singles, #2 seed Reed Taylor upset top seeded Jacob Baehr 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(9). Dan Erickson was the 3rd seed in this division. He won a round but was upset 7-6(3), 6-3 by Shald. Luke Racine upset the 4th seed, George Green 1-6,6-4,1-0(6). Racine and Erickson faced each other in the consolation finals with Erickson winning 6-2,6-1.

Many of the same boys played in the 12's singles. Reed Taylor and Jacob Baehr while both were unseeded the won two matches each and made the semifinals before falling. Daniel Sullivan was the 3rd seed and he won a round before losing in the quarterfinals to Baehr.

By far and away the biggest draw of the tourney was the Boys' 14 singles. Austin Racine was seeded #2, while Chris Ephron was seeded #3. Ephron won the event over Austin Racine 7-5,2-6,1-0(8). Daniel Sullivan won a round then lost to Ephron. Harley Spann won a round and lost a heartbreaker 10-7 in the third in his second match. Span won three consolation matches before losing in the consolation semis. Sullivan won a consolation round as well.

Ephron and Austin Racine won rounds in the main draw of Boys 16. Racine won tree rounds including the consolation finals.

Locals played each other in the Boys 12 Doubles final. Baehr and Erickson defeated Sullivan and Reed Taylor 8-2.

In the Boys 14 Doubles, Ephron and Austin Racine downed #2 seeds 8-3 in the finals.

Frances Taylor finished second in the round robin Girls 10 division. Patricia Herring downed Taylor 6-4,1-6,1-0. Taylor also played in the Girls 12. She won a round and then lost to #2 6-1,6-1.

Lucy Taylor and Kelly Barnhill played the Girls 14 event and both did quite well. Taylor beat #3 seed Anne Matthews 6-4,4-6,1-0, won another round and was beaten in the semis 2-6,7-5,1-0(8) by Hannah Lairmore.

Barnhill won her opening match and then lost to Lairmore 6-4,6-2. But Barnhill came back strong in the consolation draw winning all three of her matches including 6-1,6-4 over Anne Matthews in the final.

Britni Thibodeau and Kelly Barnhill played in the Girls' 16s. Thibodeau lost in a third set tiebreaker in her first match and then lost a tough consolation match as well.

Barnhill won her first match 6-0 and 6-2 but dropped the second match. In the consolation, she lost a hard fought 6-3,7-6(5) first match to Peirson Rogers.

In the Girls 18, Thibodeau had a BYE, won her semifinal match 6-2,6-1 then lost the final 6-0,6-1 to Dorie Courtney.

In the Girls 12 Doubles Frances Taylor teamed with Libby McLeod and won their first match 8-6 but lost the final 8-0.

Lucy Taylor teamed with Marymartha Grizzle to defeat Kelly Barnhill and Athina Amanor 8-5. Taylor and Grizzle won the final match 8-5.
