Girl's 18 USTA National Clay Court Tennis Championships July 2009By Scott Harrison
Gulf Breeze's Jackie Kasler was seeded 17-32 alphabetically at the 192 player Girl's 18 USTA National Clay Court Championships held last week at the Racquet Club of Memphis. This is the premier National Event for the Girls 18. The college coaches flock to the event to pick up the participants notebook that contains bios of every player in the tourney. Of course, Kasler has committed to Auburn so she can concentrate on the tennis and not the recruiters!
After a first round BYE, Kasler had a good tournament beating Tampa's Amber Li 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 128 then downing Tina Tehrani of New Canaan, CT 7-6(5), 6-2 in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Kasler was beaten 6-0,6-2 by top seeded Lilly Kimbell of New Braunfels, TX. In the feed-in consolation, Kasler beat Melissa Kopinski of Palos Hills, IL 6-4, 6-2 and lost to Britney Sanders of Ontario, CA 6-4,3-6,6-0.
Jackie also played doubles with Erin Vierra of Norwell, MA. They beat Alex Martin (Mount Pleasant, SC) and Emily Stein (Broomall, PA) 6-4,6-2. However, the 6th seeded team of Robin Anderson (Matawan, NJ) and Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, NY) won a hotly contested second round match over Kasler and Vierra by a 6-7(7), 6-2, 7-5 score.
All in all it was a pretty good showing for Jackie.
